The Grand Harbour, Malta

Known to Europeans for its Mediterranean climate, history, and culture, most Yankees (as some Maltese refer to us) have no idea where Malta is! I certainly didn’t know anything about this archipelago when I ran across gorgeous, intriguing pictures of the capital’s skyline. But after just a little research, I knew I had to explore it during my annual hiatus from Ohio winter!

The 10th smallest country in the world

Malta consists of three inhabited islands, the largest island is also named Malta and is only 92 square miles in size.

Malta is 58 miles south of Sicily, Italy and 186 miles north of North Africa.

Head down the stairs from my apartment, and around the corner lies the entrance to the magical Grand Harbour!

Boats of all types and sizes can be found here, including these massive superyachts in the background. Some include swimming pools and tennis courts!

This canon once guarded the entrance to the Grand Harbour. The two lighthouses were established in 1450 and 1908.

The harbor is beautifully lit at night. This is a photo of the Esplora Science Center, formally used as a hospital by the Royal Navy.

My home for the next month

My home base for my first month in Malta is in Bormla, one of the Three Cities located across the harbour from the capital, Valletta.

The apartment is located in a narrow alley, lined with old, stone buildings, typical of this area of Malta.

Shades of blues and browns dominate the landscape, changing in tone depending on the time of day and weather.

The primary architectural influence of the area is Boroque and was heavily shaped by The Knights of St. John, who governed Malta from 1530 to 1798.

I’ve seen several rowing teams practicing in the evenings. I suspect they may be preparing for the Malta National Regatta held on March 31st.

Another view of the harbour’s entrance from Gardjola Gardens.
